8 Of The Most Incredible Peruvian Wildlife Species To Spot

Giant River Otter

Reaching up to an impressive 1.8m in length, the Giant River Otter is the world’s largest otter species. These highly social mammals live in large family groups, working together to defend their territories against predators like Caiman. Their loud whistles and distinctive calls can often be heard long before they are seen, and are best spotted in Tambopata in oxbow lakes such as Lake Sandoval.

Andean Condor

A giant flying apex predator, the Andean Condor dominates the deep canyons and mountains of Peru – with fully grown adults measuring as large as 3 meters in wingspan. Able to glide for long periods without any effort whatsoever, they are often seen soaring above the Colca Canyon near Arequipa, as well as in the high altitude ravines of the Cusco region.

Jaguar

The largest wild cat in the entire Americas, the mighty Jaguar is one of Peru’s most powerful and ferocious predators. They have a remarkable bite which can pierce through turtle shells and skulls of certain prey – however are surprisingly elusive as they prefer to stick to the shadows of the jungle canopy. While hard to spot, areas like Tambopata Rainforest and Iquitos are some of the best places to spot Jaguars in Peru.

Humboldt Penguin

Unlike the larger Antarctic Penguins, the Peruvian Humboldt Penguins thrive along the desert coastlines of this South American country – where cold underwater currents provide an abundant source of fish. Able to swim at impressive speeds, they usually nest in rocky outcroppings – such as the Ballestas Islands which are one of the very best places to spot them.

Scarlet Macaw

While there are many incredible Peruvian birds to spot, the Scarlet Macaw is one of the most colourful – and is instantly recognisable by its bright red, yellow and blue feathers. These intelligent Parrots form strong lifelong pair bonds, and communicate with their loud calls and croaks. They are especially famous for gathering at clay licks – which are essential for their diets – where large flocks of Scarlet Macaws create unforgettable wildlife spectacles.

Pink River Dolphin

One of the Amazon’s most mysterious creatures, the Pink River Dolphin is famous for its unusual pink colouring – which usually gets deeper and brighter with age. Unlike other open water dolphin species, these freshwater mammals have flexible necks which help them navigate flooded forests and murky Amazon waters. They can often be spotted in many areas of the Peruvian Amazon, and especially around the rivers of Iquitos.

Spectacled Bear

The only native bear species in South America, Spectacled Bears are easily recognised by their cream-coloured markings around its eyes, and was made world-famous by the Paddington Bear television series. These elusive animals inhabit the Andean cloudforests, and are very skilled climbers. This is because their diets consist largely of fruits, plants and bromeliads, although they occasionally eat small animals too.
